Don't Harm Your Valentine!
Even though your heart is in the right place, you could very well end up hurting your valentine, yourself, and even the planet - with the most enticing gift!
Although perfumes and fragrances make our world smell better, they can also be harmful to people and to the planet, because they might contain substances like cancer-causing formaldehyde or phthalates.
Those are used to make fragrances last longer, but 1 in 3 people report having health problems such as asthma attacks, hay fever, headache, migraine, dizziness, breathing problems, rashes, congestion, nausea and seizures, when exposed to fragranced products. One of the worst offenders to look for on the label is artificial musk, which has been linked to cancer, and accumulates in the body.
Additionally, 40 percent of chemicals added to consumer products that wind up in the air may react with sunlight and induce ozone contamination.
Tempted to look for something else to gift on Valentine's Day?
Flowers or chocolates are considered as safe bets, but may be just too safe. Perfume is much more of an emotional gift, because smells and emotions are all processed in the same region of the brain. That’s the limbic system, also known as the "emotional brain." And emotions will come racing! Pheromones, those chemicals that allow members of the same species to identify each other, are said to be at the origin of sexual attraction and even love!
The power of perfume has always been enticing to mankind. Evidence of early perfume making was found in Egypt and Mesopotamia, using natural materials such as bark, wood, roots, moss, leaves, and flowers. But most of today’s fragrances are made of synthetic chemicals and it is estimated that some 3,000 of those are used to manufacture a variety of products that we use daily: beyond perfumes and colognes, it is most types of personal care products as well as laundry detergents, softeners and cleaning products, that are “enhanced” with some kind of fragrance.

Whichever you choose, don’t miss the opportunity to show your romantic side of Valentine’s Day. According to legend, when Emperor Claudius II of Rome condemned marriage for young men because according to him, single men were better soldiers than married men, priest Valentin defied the emperor’s decree and kept marrying young lovers in secret. Pope Alexander VI, moved by the story, eventually named him the "Patron of Lovers" in 1496.
